A Michigan teenager has pleaded guilty to killing his 11-year-old sister who died after being shot in the head with a shotgun.
Corbin James Redman, 17, was accused of shooting and killing Addison Marie Redman in their Arcada Township home on the morning of August 20 in 2019.
The teenager was just 15 when Addison Redman was shot one time in the head with a 20-gauge shotgun, the Gratiot County Sheriff's Office said at the time.
On Monday, February 1, Corbin Redman pleaded guilty to the crime, WNEM reports. He has been charged with careless or reckless discharge of a firearm.
The investigation into Addison Redman's death was lengthy and involved multiple search warrants, testimony from five witnesses, a crime lab in Ohio, a shotgun manufacturer in Connecticut, and an ammunition manufacturer in Italy.
"There's been a lot of interest in this community wondering why did it take so long, but quite frankly, this is the kind of case where there was a lot of discovery to be done," Prosecuting Attorney Keith Kushion told WNEM.
The final results of the investigation were delivered to the prosecutor on January 16, 2020 and a warrant charging Corbin Redman was issued that same day.
He was arraigned in the 65th District Court in Ithaca but released on a $100,000 personal recognizance bond under terms of house arrest with a GPS tether, according to the Gratiot County Prosecutor's Office.
The conditions stipulated that the teenager be confined to his home except when undertaking farm chores outside or accompanying his mother to work while continuing to take high school classes online, according to The Morning Sun.
"We were satisfied that if he was supervised in the home by his parents or his grandfather, that the community could be protected at all times," Kushion said.
Corbin Redman called his father, who was out of town at the time, to report his sister's death on the morning of August 20, 2019.
His father then called Gratiot County Central Dispatch to tell them his son had called "and said his sister appears to be dead from a gunshot wound," according to the Sun.
Police arrived at the residence on West Tyler Road and found several weapons that were sent for testing, along with other evidence that was gathered at the scene.
Defense attorney Joshua Blanchard previously argued that the case should be dismissed because police did not do a thorough investigation or look seriously at the possibility someone else could have committed the crime.
A designation hearing is set to be scheduled in April to determine if Corbin Redman should be sentenced as a juvenile or an adult. He faces up to two years in prison if sentenced as an adult.
The Gratiot County Sheriff's Office told Newsweek they were unable to comment on the case as it is still an open investigation and sentencing is yet to occur.
